Shipman & Wright, Attorney's at Law of Wilmington, N.C. welcomed New Hanover County's first women and children's hospital into our community by donating a Nintendo Wii. The Wii is a fun, engaging, innovative game console that provides interactive opportunities for all who participate no matter the age, gender or physical ability. And thanks to Shipman & Wright, many patients at the new children's hospital will have the chance to experience the Nintendo Wii.
The Wii offers the unique feature of wireless remote control, which can be used as a hand, held pointing device and detects acceleration in three dimensions allowing utilization of motor skills. The Wii remote used for virtual sports such as bowling, tennis, golf and other games require physical activity, make it possible for patients with all levels of injury to enjoy the experience of a physical workout that would otherwise not be possible.
The idea of donating a Wii began when attorney Jean Martin uncovered a news article about how the Wii systems were being used in hospitals across the country for rehabilitation. Jean presented the idea to the rest of her colleagues at the firm and they began discussing who in their community would enjoy the unique benefits and rewarding opportunities in which the Nintendo Wii provides. The firm chose the Betty H. Cameron women and children's hospital because of the targeted ability for the Wii to make the rehabilitation process for children in the unit a little more fun. The Wii also provides entertainment while masking the hard work of exercise and therapy.
"We are so fortunate to have this new women and children's hospital here in New Hanover County. Because of what this means to our community, we wanted to be a part of it. Through our cases helping injured parties, particularly children, we know first hand the importance of rehabilitation, and that includes maintaining a positive attitude during recovery. We hope that the Wii will provide some fun and entertaining moments to children during what can be an anxious and difficult time. If these games can lift the spirit of just one child, then our gift will be worth the while." said attorney, Jean Martin.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital provides the region's most technically advanced care in a setting designed to promote healing. The new hospital opened with patients Saturday, September 14, 2008.
